5 Critical Things To Avoid When Using A Dog Barking Collar

A dog barking collar may sound like a great idea - they promise to help you easily fix your dog's problem barking with a simple flick of a switch. While when used correctly they can certainly improve your dog's behavior, don't expect they will be a magic solution without any aid on your part. Used incorrectly, you will only make things worse with them - there are some steps you should avoid if you plan to see success using dog barking collars.
1. Not Starting At A Low Setting First
If you turn up the heat or sensitivity too quickly on your dog barking collar, there's a pretty good chance that your dog will be punished too severely for even minor offenses. Instead, you should set the collar at a low shock level or even just a vibration at first. Chances are, your dog will still notice the correction and then if you need to turn up the volume to curb the behavior you can.
2. Not Choosing The Right Collar
There are many different dog barking collars that are designed to stop your dog's barking - these can include everything from mild citronella collars to more controversial shock collars and varying features that are waterproof and the ability to use them remotely or even on two dogs. Choosing the right collar for your needs will guarantee to improve your chances of improving your dog's behavior.
3. Not Being Consistent
If you leave your dog to bark at some times, but shock them repeatedly at others there is no consistency to make sure you get the right results from your training. Dogs need consistency - they need all commands and corrections to be the same, or otherwise they will simply not understand how you expect them to behave.
4. Letting Your Dog's Barking Continue
Dog barking problems generally arise from dogs that have excess energy resulting from insufficient exercise, but also can be a result of you simply letting your dog's barking continue. This means they do not know the rules for behaving in your house, and unless you show them the right rules by using a dog barking collar and appropriate training methods then their behavior will not change for the better.
5. Not Training Them Appropriately
Remember that the main rule in using a training collar for training your dog, or any aid for that matter, is you eventually don't want to use it. There's no point using a collar and having your dog misbehave as soon as you take it off. It is there to use as a method of correction, but remember to use positive reinforcement and praise when your dog stops barking. You should be training your dog to remain quiet when you say so, not only after you shock them with the collar.
There are many dog barking collars you can choose from - if the idea of a shock collar sounds a little too harsh to you then you might even take a look at a vibrating dog collar which is a much gentler alternative that can still be just as effective in stopping your dog's problem barking.
